I thought in the beginning I wanted to use the story “Yellow Wallpaper” for my film adaptation, but then I decided to use the story “A Rose for Emily.” I finally turned in my paper after having seven or eight drafts of the story. I could not figure out how I wanted to end it, because I wanted to keep the end of the film exciting but also close to the short story itself. I focused on the relationships between the characters because I think that is a really important aspect of films. I think the audience needs to feel a connection to the characters to really enjoy the film. In the story, I changed the relationship between Emily and the “Negro” who I changed his name to Jim. I established a relationship from childhood with them and created something that turned into more than just a friendship. Then when Homer came along, I had Emily fall in love with him and Jim got incredibly jealous. He was the one who bought the poison and killed Homer, which in turn killed Emily because of the grief that she felt.
I really enjoyed creating a love triangle in the film version of my story. I feel like it added a whole extension of the plot that wouldn’t have been included before. I also loved that I changed the ending to Jim killing Homer and not Emily. I felt like that was a more reasonably ending to the story that viewers would actually accept rather than Emily just going crazy herself.
I am unsure of my changes between past and present tense. I tried to show how the movie would play out, but it was difficult to do in keeping the tense appropriate.
