I think Paul decides to leave town because he has nothing to hold him there. He doesn’t like school, he doesn’t have a good family life, and the only thing he enjoys is his job. I think he realized that in New York he could be a part of the city and the night life and that drew him to go out and steal the money from Denny & Carson and flee to New York.
