The man knows he can use Elisa’s love for flowers as a way to get her to have him fix a pot for her. He knows if he asks about her flowers and makes her trust him, he will be able to get some work out of her. When Elisa finds the seeds on the road she is hurt and furious at the same time. She starts crying at the end of the story because she trusted this man that some woman wanted to have Chrysanthemums like she did. She cries weakly at the end of the story and hides it from her husband because she wants him to still see her as a strong woman and not weak.
