Everything That Rises Must Converge

Both Joy/Hulga and Julian have been to college and think they are smarter and better than their families. They both think that just because they went to college they know more than anyone else does. I thought this was very interesting that both characters in the stories we read by her had the same theme of the parents thinking they were special and the kids thinking they were better off than their parents because they had an education. I think Julian is the most sympathetic character in this story, because he gets frustrated with his mother because she has not adapted to the changing times. Here again I see the theme of the generation gaps and the difference between the way the younger and older generations act and think.
