My Film

For my film, I am going to use the short story, A Rose for Emily. I will keep the title of the film the same as the short story because I am going to try and incorporate as much as the original story as much as I can. Also, I am going to keep the setting of the story mostly the same. I think this story couldn’t function in any other time period other than the original one. I have not decided on my actors yet, but I just changed my mind on what story I want to do so I haven’t had a lot of time to think about it.

For my plot and conflict I am going to focus a lot more on Emily’s childhood with her father and incorporate the idea that he kept telling her there could never be a man good enough for her. I am going to show Emily and her servant together as secret friends as children and a relationship that blossoms into a forbidden love. Then when Emily is grown, she is expected by the townspeople to find a husband and marry. She just wants to live with her servant in their comfortable lifestyle but she is afraid she will not be able to continue on without suspicion. She finds a man who she can tolerate and they start to date and she carries on the persona of a relationship. Then, she starts spending less time with the servant and more time with this new man in her life. She starts falling in love and now is torn in between the two men in her life, one she has loved all of her life, and one that is a new and exciting love. Finally she decides to choose this new man in her life to be with and they get engaged. Her servant is so upset he decides he cannot lose her. He goes and buys rat poisoning and tries to put some in the man’s drink that night. He accidently puts it in Emily’s drink but she never takes a sip. He worries all night long that he killed her, but the man at the store warned Emily and she poisons her servant. He dies that night in his sleep and Emily and her new husband move out of town to start a new life together.

Although I am changing the end of the story I wanted to keep a lot of the same aspects from the story in my movie. I think it is important to incorporate a lot of the original plot in the movie so it still has the feel of the short story it is based off of.
